Nigeria have been on a poor run of form in recent times with most noatble an embarrassing defeat at the hand of South Africa and a shocking draw to Corsica who arent even in the FIFA or UEFA Rankings! These poor results have seen outcries from Nigerians alike for Gernot Rohr to start including more Home-Based Nigerian players which you can see why with the amount of talent that is on display there. The likes of Stephen Odey and Sikiru Olatunbosun have been names considered while also 20-Year-Old Alhassan Ibrahim has also been included which is very understandable with him being Arguably one of the NPFL’s best players.
The Nigerian International has been in the Super Eagles squad since May 2017 when he was called up for his extremely impressive performances for Akwa United which has seen him become the focal point of the team. He made his debut for the national team alongside fellow NPFL stars, Stephen Odey and Sikiru Olatunbosun in their 1-1 draw to Corsica. This was a huge step for the league as previously Gernor Rohr was adamant of having home-based players due to them ‘not playing at the right standard’. Ibrahim most definitely caught the eye of Rohr as for their next game against South Africa he remained in the side. Rohr kept him in the side because he believed he has quality and in home-based Nigerian players you can find that if given the proper chance.
The 20-year-old stands at 6 foot 5 inches tall and has often been likened to his idol and fellow Nigerian, Nwankwo Kanu. But do not be fooled by his height as for a big man he is a fantastic dribbler. Alhassan Ibrahim one of the leagues top scorers and he currently sits of 10 goals for Akwa United who are in a comfortable 11th place spot. Ibrahim is also a tremendous finisher so there is little wonder why Gernot Rohr wanted him in his Super Eagles side and it paid off so it makes you think if it works to bring in the home-based players why not bring in more?
With recent success for Alhassan Ibrahim in the national team there is no doubt that clubs will now to be looking at the ‘New Kanu’ as for such a young player he has bags of talent and ability. For such a tall player to be so well-rounded he would be a great signing for many teams so you wonder why clubs have flocked in the masses trying to acquire the young talents services. With the right management Alhassan Ibrahim can potentially go onto bigger and better and eventually play for one of Europe’s Elite teams.
