In Life, everyone loves a great success story, from Leicester’s surprise premier league title win, to Marco Russ’ return to the game after being diagnosed with cancer and more recently to MFM FC’s relegation survival to Title contenders. Another one to add to this list is Gianluca Lapadula’s rise from the depths of Italian Football to living his dream and playing in one of the world’s biggest clubs.
At the age of 26 Lapadula finally got his big move to the top flight of Italian football with AC Milan after an extremely impressive season with Pescara scoring 30 goals and assisting 12 times in 46 games. To get this dream move is the least that he deserved for the hard work he has put in to get to that level because life was not always easy for the Italian. Starting off in the 3rd tier with Pro Vercelli, Lapadula was playing for little money to no money, This problem would catch up to him and the clubs he played for declared bankrupt multiple times during his career.
To have this problem did very little to motivate Lapadula and he came close to quitting football many times during the early part of his career but instead he would work harder and harder to hopefully play at a level where he would not have to worry about money. Lapadula decided to take the daunting step to go out of his comfort zone and ply his trade in Slovenia with the side ND Gorica and this would be the turning point in the players career. After scoring 14 goals in 32 games he would return to Italy as a new man and the goals were flowing.
Another Impressive Loan spell followed, this time with Teramo in the Lega Pro where he netted 24 goals in 41 games and this form attracted the interest of Pescara who snapped him up, which would turn out to be a great acquisition. The 27-year-old finished the season as the Serie B top goal scorer with 25 goals and lead Pescara to promotion to the Serie A. It was then AC Milan who came calling for the Italians signature and picked him up for a fee of around €10m.
This Season Lapadula has become somewhat of a cult hero amongst Calcio fans due to his hardworking mentality. However, Lapadula has unfortunately not been given a proper chance and has only started 7 games scoring 5 goals which is a good return for someone who is in their first ever season in the top flight. It is unfortunate that Lapadula has not been given a proper chance as Bacca has been very inconsistent and Lapadula would be the perfect replacement but it has not been the case.
Lapadula is such a hardworking striker who has been through so much in his career which he must be given a lot of credit for. From the very brink, he managed to motivate himself and the hard work has paid off with him now living everyones dream. Whether he gets a chance next season with Milan or he moves elsewhere to get first team football Lapadula will always be recognised for his work rate and scoring ability and would be a valuable asset to any team.
