Football fans in the modern world believe that once a player makes the ‘dream’ move to China then their career is over however, this is not the case with players like Renato Augusto and Paulinho playing some of the best football in the careers which leads them to international recognition. Another player who can be added to the list is Kenyan star, Michael Olunga.
Although he is yet to play a game for his new side Guizhou Hengfeng Zhicheng, Olunga has been receiving plaudits for his performances on the international stage. The 23-year-old has scored 4 goals in his previous 4 outings with the Harambee Stars. this impressive return has seen him turn heads to say the least. Coming off a 1-1 draw to Uganda, in which he scored, the Uganda coach Milutin Sredojević said that Olunga’s contribution to the side as ‘world class’.
Standing at a large 6’3″ tall the ‘target man’ goes against the typical stereotype of strikers that tall, the Kenyan is very fast and is a fantastic finisher as shown by his prolific returns for both club and country. His ability has seen Kenyans praise the player so highly and is reaching to a legendary status amongst them.
The Kenyan Striker is a recent signing to the Chinese Super League after an absolutely fantastic second half to the season with Swedish side Djurgardens IF. Olunga had a torrid first half of the season with his first season in the side, failing to score in 14 games. However, once he got his first goal the floodgates opened and the former Goh Mahia man managed to bag himself 12 goals and 4 assists in just 13 games. After this it was only right that clubs came calling and it was the far east that managed to lure him over.
On January 24th 2017, Olunga finalised his move to Guizhou Hengfeng Zhicheng for just over £3m, which could be seen as the bargain of the year! He would be joining a side that included the likes of Nikica Jelavic and Tjaronn Chery. The side line-up typically in a 4-2-3-1 system which means there is stiff competition between the two target men of Jelavic and Olunga but once he is given a chance by his side I have no doubts that Olunga will be dominating the division and will become a star in a truly up and coming league.
